Select sites and venues that result in minimal environmental, safety and security impacts.
Whenever possible, event organizer should select sites and venues that:
- are centrally located to minimize travel distances for participants, organizers and employees;
- are safe and secure for participants, organizers, employees and community;
- are accessible to all participants;
- are energy and water efficient;
- are serviced by accessible public transportation; and
- have the necessary infrastructure in place.
In the absence of a strong legacy case, consider temporary structures. When constructing new venues, build for low impact and high legacy.
- consider community needs and respect local culture and heritage;
- use environmentally sustainable design, materials, products, and construction methods;
- employ local workforce;
- use efficient water and energy technologies;
- ensure that venues are barrier free and accessible to persons with disabilities; and
- ensure environmentally sensitive ecosystems are not impacted.
